Police in Kwara warn against unlicensed firearms, ammunition

The Kwara Police Command, on Monday, advised the public to submit any unlicensed firearms and ammunition in their possession to the nearest police station.

This advice was contained in a press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi and made available to our reporter in Ilorin.

According to the statement, any person, or persons, who possess unlicensed firearms will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

It said the command had also directed all the state based vigilante security organisations to report themselves to the Divisional Police Officers of their communities for authentication and briefing.

The statement reminded the public that the laws regarding possession and control of firearms and ammunition were still in force.

According to the statement, the category of firearms to be possessed by individuals, is for gaming; and to be strictly licensed by the IGP.

“The commissioner of police with the consent of the state governor may by order, prohibit the possession or control of firearms without the licence of an authority, as specified above,’’ it added.
