Protesters stop Senator Adeleke’s burial

Angry supporters and sympathisers have taken to the streets of Ede, the hometown of the late Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, forcing the family to postpone the burial of the politician.

Adeleke died in the earlier hour of Sunday morning.

The supporters of the late politician who are now lighting bonfires across the town to register their anger believe that he was poisoned at a political gathering he attended the previous day at Olupona, Iwo Osun State.

Sources said the Senator attended meeting till 2am on Sunday before he died few hours later.

The suspicion has caused the family to take his remains to Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo for autopsy.

Osun State government has appealed to the people to remain calm.

“While the government awaits the reports of the autopsy which is being conducted, we can only calm our people to take this huge and incalculable loss with equanimity,” Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon wrote in a statement.

Senator Adeleke, representing Osun West Senatorial District was born on January 15, 1955 to the family of Ayoola Adeleke and Esther Adeleke. His father was once a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He attended Christ Church Primary School, Enugu Ogbomosho Grammar School, Ogbomoso, Oyo State and proceeded to the Jacksonville State University United States of America where he bagged a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science in 1983. In 1985, he obtained his Masters in Public Administration from the same. He was the first civilian Governor of Osun State when it was created in 1992.

In 2007, Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke contested for a seat in the Osun West Senatorial district under the platform People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and won. He lost out in the 2011 elections.

However, In the 2015 elections, he again re-contested for a seat in the Osun West Senatorial District under the Platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and won.

Adeleke, 62, died of heart attack at Biket Hospital, Osogbo. He will be buried at 10 am tomorrow, a source told SaharaReporters.
