Unilorin commissions community counseling centre

Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin, on Tuesday in Ilorin commissioned a community-based Counseling Centre established by the institution.

Ambali said while performing the exercise, that the gesture was a welcome development and worthy of appreciation.

He explained that the centre was established to sustain and to positively impact the lives of residents of its host community.

The VC explained that the centre, the brain-child of the Faculty of Education, was a collaborative arrangement with the Crescent Gold Hospital, Tanke, Ilorin.

Ambali said that the university was achieving its mandate by providing opportunities to Nigerians through community services.

He added that the Centre would also serve as laboratory for the students of the university.

Ambali said “we shall always be here to support the clinic and Tanke community. It is one of our outlets to deliver our mandate; we are leaving up to our name.

The Chairman, Medical Board of Crescent Gold Hospital, Dr. Musbau Babalola, described the collaboration as a heart-warming opportunity that would also provide a window of assistance to the communities and outsiders.

Babalola, who disclosed that the hospital had about 50 specialists attending to different cases, said the services would also provide humanitarian collaboration.

The Head of the Department of Counselor Education of the university, Prof. Lawal Yahaya, said that efforts to establish the centre started during the 2015/2016 academic session.

Yahaya said that the centre was unique and first of its kind in terms of Private Public Partnership for community-based counseling.

He said it would help in addressing cases of drop-outs and various forms of deviant behaviours among children and youths.
