NANS upbeat on ASUU, FG standoff

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), on Monday, said that it was high time the Nigerian workers reaped the fruits of their labour.

The NANS President, Mr Chinonso Obasi, made this assertion on the occasion of the 2017 International Workers’ Day in Abuja.

According to Obasi, the annual May Day celebration reminds every Nigerian of the sacrifices and attendant pains workers undergo in ensuring nationhood.

He said that despite the challenges including the menace of corruption, the Nigerian working class had remained the only option for the continued sustenance of nationhood.

“We immensely thank every Nigerian worker for their love, passion and service to nationhood.

“Without failing on our part, we align our voices with those, who believe that our workers are as short-changed just as the colonialists had short-changed Nigeria.

“We unanimously support the agitation by Nigerians that the least worker be paid a minimum wage of N100,000 monthly under the prevailing economic atmosphere in the country.

“It is painful that the worker,s who drive the machinery of government, are denied their salaries, arrears, promotion, welfare and pension, both in service and retirement while a few, who are on political appointments milk the treasury dry,’’ he said.

He said that all Nigerian workers deserved to earn their rewards at the turn of the month.

The NANS president implored government at all levels to prioritise workers’ salaries in the interest of individual families and the society as a whole.

Obasi urged the Nigerian workers to always remain patriotic and committed to duty, so that they could continue in their bid to take Nigeria to the befitting status it deserved.
