Golf: Willy confident of causing upset in final round of WAGT’s B & E tournament

Nigerian professional golfer Gift Willy on Saturday said he was confident ahead of the final round in spite of his frustration at trailing the leader by nine points.

Willy could not make good use of Saturday’s lead after three days of play at the WAGT B & E tournament in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Visitor Mapwanya from Zimbabwe continued with his lead over two days.

Willy, a level par 72, told NAN in an interview that his best was still to come, adding that his game was improving by each round of the tournament.

“So far, so good. The course is in a good condition but quite wet and the balls always carry muds so you can’t do too much as the situation can be very difficult to control.

“But the game is going well and we just finished our third round with the Zimbabwean leading. He is on +2, while I am on +11, which means I am nine shots behind the leader, but I believe an upset is still on the cards.

“I played badly on day one, shooting an 82 (+8) but I made up for my mistakes in day two by shooting a 74 (+2) to throw myself back into contention.

“Today, I had some prospects of shooting under par but I threw all my chances away and finished 72 (+1).

“This was however still the best score of the day as it shot me to the sixth position on the leaderboard,” he said.

Willy however said he was confident of still finishing top of the leaderboard, adding that he was looking forward to a good battle in the final round on Sunday.

“In golf, we say `it is never over until it is over’. “Everybody has his own goal when you come to play a tournament and my goal is to win. Anything short of that is unacceptable,’’ he said.
