FRSC sues for caution as rainy season sets in

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned motorists to be conscious of hazards associated with the rainy season and drive with caution to guard against preventable accidents.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Bisi Kazeem, quoted the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, as saying given the advice in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Oyeyemi said that he was worried about the rate at which many motorists usually neglect the basic ethics of driving during the rainy season.

The careless attitude of drivers, according to him, in many cases has resulted in avoidable accidents with the attendant deaths and injuries.

“Motorists should drive cautiously in this season of heavy and incessant downpour being witnessed in most parts of the country recently.

“The weather is foggy this period, leading to poor visibility, hence the need for drivers to adopt commonsense speed limits,’’ the FRSC boss said.

The corps marshal also warned motorists against disobedience to traffic rules and regulation to curb road crashes.

Oyeyemi reminded drivers that special squads of the FRSC had been deployed across the country to monitor compliance and bring violators to book.

He also enjoined drivers to always operate with functional lighting and braking systems, wipers and good tyres that had effective grips of the ground.

According to him, when the visibility is very poor, drivers should park well in safe places and make sure they see and be seen through their head and rear lights.

Oyeyemi assured members of the public that the corps would continue to do its best to ensure safety on the nation’s roads.

‘’In return, every road user should take it as a civic responsibility to comply with the traffic rules and regulations to avoid unnecessary carnage.’’

The corps marshal enjoined drivers of articulated vehicles to ensure compliance with minimum safety standards and drive within the regulated speed limits.

He also called on motorists yet to install the speed limiters in their vehicles to do so without delay to avoid arrest and prosecution.

The corps marshal emphasised FRSC’s commitment to enforcing the ongoing psychological and emotional evaluation of erring drivers.
