S/Court verdict victory for supremacy of party convention – Akobundu
Retired Col. Austin Akobundu, a former Vice President, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-East, has described the Supreme Court verdict on the party’s leadership crisis as a victory for the supremacy of party convention.
Akobundu, also a former Minister of State for Defence, told our reporter in a telephone interview in Enugu that the verdict was not only for PDP but also a victory for democracy.
“It is also a victory for the people, political parties and the supremacy of party convention.’’
He commended the judiciary for standing by the truth and defending the country’s democracy at all times.
In his reaction, Mr Obioma Eze-Ogbulafor, the Chairman, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia, described the Supreme Court verdict as a victory for the rule of law in Nigeria.
Eze-Ogbulafor, the son of a former PDP National Chairman, said that the apex court had restored the hope of the common man.
“The judiciary is the last hope of the down trodden in the society,’’ he said.
He said that the PDP was a grassroots party and thanked the court for ensuring justice.
It was reported that Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour of the Supreme Court, validated the PDP National Convention held in Port Harcourt on May 21, 2016.
Rhodes-Vivour said that the Sheriff-led National Executive Committee was dissolved at that convention in line with the party’s constitution.
