Man docked for allegedly beating trader with planks
A 26-year-old man, Hammed Fatai, who allegedly beat a trader with different sizes of planks, on Friday appeared before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.
Fatai, a resident of Wagbare Estate, Offin in Ikorodu area of Lagos State, is standing trial on a two-count charge of demanding property unlawfully and assault, with intent to steal.
According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Mary Ajiteru, the accused committed the offences on July 17, at their community in Ikorodu around 4: 00 p.m.
Ajiteru said the accused unlawfully assaulted one Mr Ikechukwu Obazi by beating him with a plank, which has caused him a permanent deformity.
“Obazi was badly injured by the accused and was taken to the hospital for treatment by his neighbours.
“The accused and others assaulted and battered the complainant with different sizes of planks, with intent to steal from him.
Ajiteru said the offences contravened Sections 300 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to our reporter, Section 173 stipulates three years imprisonment for assault, with intent to steal.
The Magistrate, Mr O.O.Olatunji, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned till Aug.17, for mention.
