EXCLUSIVE: Nnamdi Kanu not the only Biafra leader – IPOB front liner

Letter to Nnamdi Kanu By Reuben Abati

An Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) front liner clarified the point that Nnamdi Kanu though presently is an important leader in the Biafran movement is not the only leader there is as there are several others who are also working hard to free Biafra from Nigeria.

Osita Ebiem, a human rights advocate and a front liner in the movement for the disintegration of Nigeria exclusively told this to NEWSVERGE in New York City, United States in response to a question on whether Kanu has the exclusive right to decide for the Igbo to either leave Nigeria or stay and push for Nigeria’s restructure.

Ebiem, further said that the recent call from some Nigerians on President Muhammadu Buhari led government to restructure the country might be a step in the right direction for the rest peoples in Nigeria but not for the Igbo.

He observed that for the Igbo that solution is coming fifty years too late.

Osita Ebiem explained that Igbo people renounced irrevocably their Nigerian citizenship on May 29, 1966. On that day, he said, was when the Nigerian government and its citizens began to kill the Igbo and to cleanse them from the country.

The pogrom he said further culminated in the Biafra War that led to the Igbo genocide in which more than 3 million of them died.

Ebiem who hails from Enugu state, argued that Nnamdi Kanu is doing the right thing by associating himself with the likes of Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose and the former Aviation Minister, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, since the idea behind the Biafra freedom movement needs the alliance of unprejudiced allies from across Nigeria.

The above argument by Osita Ebiem is consistent with some of the points he raised in an opinion article published by NEWSVERGE titled “Igbo position on Nigeria restructuring”.

In summary the article argues that: “The Igbo cannot possibly be a part of the proposed new Nigeria, no matter how attractive the idea is made to look by its advocates. On 29 May 1966, the Igbo renounced forever their Nigerian citizenship. While wishing Nigeria and Nigerians well in their quest for a workable solution to their national problem, the Igbo have unequivocally opted for a separate Igbo identity and the separation of their territory from Nigeria.”
