APDA canvasses law banning money, material gifts during elections

The Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA), on Monday, said it would sponsor a bill to ban distribution of money and gift items to voters during elections .

The National Chairman of the party, Malam Kabiru Muhammed, said this when he and members of the national secretariat of the party, visited Ado Ekiti .

He said such financial and material gifts were aimed at corrupting voters by buying their conscience.

According to him, if the bill scales through at the National Assembly, only genuine politicians will be emerging as winners in every free, fair and credible elections.

Muhammed said it was sad that some electrorate were being bamboozled to embrace what is now being referred to as “stomach infrastructure” as against “physical infrastructure”.

He explained that APDA was formed as credible alternative party that would take the country to greater heights.

“There is no room for god-fathers or money-bags in our party; we do not have those who will come and hijack the party from us.

“We we are all leaders in APDA and we will continue to welcome new members because we are currently the beautiful bride in town,” he said.

He said the party had reserved 30 per cent of appointive and elective positions to women in the party across the country.

“Ours is a clear departure from the way things were done in the past.

“No party in Nigeria today had given our type of consideration for those regarded as critical stakeholders in our body polity, as we have in our plans”, he said.

Earlier in welcome address, the Ekiti state chairman of the party, Mrs Foluke Okeya, expressed gratitude to the national leadership of the party for the visit.
