FCT minister advises elected leaders to exude humility in discharge of duties

Malam ‎Muhammad Bello, the Minister, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has advised elected leaders in any capacity to exude humility as they discharge their duties.

Bello ‎gave the advice at the swearing-in of the newly elected Exco members of the FCT Administration Press Corps in Abuja on Tuesday.

The minister said that anybody elected into position should feel honoured that such responsibility was being given to them.

“The first important lesson ‎for anyone who has been elected by people is for that person to be humble because out of many other people you were chosen.

“Not because you bribed or forced them but because they felt you are capable to hold such a position.”‎

‎He urged the “excos” to carry out their various tasks with all sense of responsibility because appointments into leadership came with enormous responsibility.

Bello commended the leadership of the FCT excos for being outstanding, adding that to him they were the best press corps in the country.

‎He, however, said that their achievements would not have been possible without the support of all members of the FCT press corps.

Bello urged the members to continue to support the leadership of the press corps in order to keep being a source of viable information. ‎

“With the support from all your members, the FCT press corps will remain the best.”

The minister assured the new exco members that his administration would support them in ensuring they had a smooth and successful tenure.

Responding, the newly elected Chairman, Mr Ikaro Attah, thanked the minister for his continued support, saying “there is no press corps highly regarded as this’’.

Attah described the minister as a humble man because he was easily accessible and always had the interest of the media.

He said that the press corps would continue to report objectively without any bias.

According to him, the concept of journalism will not be compromised because the public needs to know the truth.

“I therefore urge my colleagues to maintain their integrity as journalists.”

‎Mr Paul Abechi, the ‎Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT chapter said the various press corps helped to promote ethical standards and foster unity in the profession.

Abechi said that the press corps served as a gate to uncover quackery in the profession. ‎

He urged the new exco members to carry out their roles with integrity while upholding the profession.‎

Our correspondent reports that the eight newly elected exco members were presented certificates after taken their oaths of office. ‎

The event was attended by Directors and Secretaries in the FCTA.
