Tambuwal urges corps members to consider themselves as change agents

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Tuesday urged corps members posted to the state to consider themselves as agents of change.

Tambuwal made the call at the closing of 2017 Batch ‘A’ stream II, NYSC orientation camp in Sokoto state.

The governor urged them to freely mingle with the communities as well as engaged actively in activities that will contribute toward economic development of the state.

The governor, represented by state Head of Service, Dr Abubakar Bello, urged corps members to also strive toward eradication of poverty, fight against corruption, drugs abuse and other social vices.

The governor said that the entrepreneurship skills and other economic training acquired during the orientation should be utilised in impacting positively on their host communities.

He challenged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and other Nigerian youths to maximally explore economic potentialities in the country.

He assured them of the state government’s support on any economic and development projects they initiated.

The governor said despite security challenges in other parts of the country, Sokoto state still enjoys relative peace and reiterated government’s commitment to partner with security agencies on safeguarding lives and property in the state.

The State’s NYSC Board Chairman, Alhaji Abubakr Ladan, urged corps members to ensure good conducts in their host communities and challenged them to pursue recognition of available awards during their service year.

He said that arrangements had been made to facilitate meaningful participation in community development projects in the state.

The State’s NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, said corps members had gone through various skills empowerment training aimed at encouraging self-reliance in accordance with the Federal Government’s efforts to facilitate economic development in the country.

Abubakar said 95 per cent of corps members redeployed to the state were posted to teach in the schools as their primary assignments to complement Gov. Tambuwal’s efforts to boost the education sector.

He said also to support Tambuwal’s resolve to improve rural dwellers living standards, 75 per cent Medical Doctors and health auxiliary workers were posted to rural communities.

The coordinator urged NYSC members to facilitate religious tolerance and ethnic understanding in the communities as well as initiate programmes that will have direct bearing to human development in line with NYSC scheme.

Our correspondent reports that 2, 092 corps members participated in the orientation camp in Sokoto and the event was attended by heads of law enforcement agencies, traditional rulers, government officials among others.
