Germany’s 1954 World Cup winner Schaefer dies

Hans Schaefer, a member of West Germany’s 1954 World Cup-winning team, died on Tuesday at age 90, his former club Cologne said.

According to the Bild paper, Schaefer died peacefully in the presence of his family, after having turned 90 on Oct. 19.

The left winger Schaefer scored 15 goals in 39 caps between 1952 and 1962, captaining the West German team at the 1958 and 1962 World Cups after the 1954 triumph.

He spent his entire club career, between 1948 and 1965, at Cologne.
According to Cologne president Werner Spinner, Schaefer is immortal as world champion and biggest icon of the club.

“The whole FC Cologne family is in deep mourning and our thoughts are with Hans Schaefer’s relatives,’’ Spinner said in a statement.

Forward Horst Eckel is now the sole survivor from the 1954 team which famously upset highly-favoured Hungary 3-2 in the World Cup final at Bern, Switzerland.
