Unilorin procures optometry equipment

Unilorin explains suspension of allowances to staff

The University of Ilorin has procured an optometry equipment for the teaching and training of students in its Department of Optometry and Vision Science, Faculty of Life Sciences.

Prof. Sidikat Ijaiya, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the university, who visited the department on Tuesday, expressed satisfaction with the quality of the equipment.

She described the equipment as very critical and central to quality teaching and training of students.

The deputy vice-chancellor was conducted round the equipment by the Head of the Department, Prof. Mathew Oriowo.

She said that the equipment would be used in clinical services for the benefits of members of the university community and the public at large.

Ijaiya said that the state-of-the-art equipment would further put the university in the limelight as one of the few universities in Nigeria with optometry department.

She said that University of Benin was the closest university with a similar department.

She commended the head of the department for single-handedly working towards the realisation of the unit right from the formative stage.

The don pledged that the management of the university would continue to support and assist the department whenever necessary.

She advised students of the department to be serious and focused since they would be dealing with human eyes, which she described as very fragile and not replaceable.

Earlier, Prof. Oriowo, who received the deputy vice-chancellor, affirmed that the equipment were of standard and would help the successful take-off of the clinical training in the school.

He listed some of the optometry equipment to include ophthalmoscope, manual keratometer and auto refractor, among others.
