How to deepen democracy – Akeredolu
Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State on Tuesday said a free and fair electoral process remains the only means of deepening the current democratic experiment.
Akeredolu stated this in Akure at the inauguration of the chairman and members of Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) and Ondo State Development and Property Corporation (OSDPC).
He urged the ODIEC members to ensure that the next local government election was free, fair and credible, adding that the inauguration was to bring democratic governance to the people at the grassroots.
“This occasion underscores the seriousness which this administration attaches to democratic representation at the level where majority of our people feel the direct impact of the activities of elected representatives.
“For us as a party, it is another electoral promise fulfilled.
“The practice and effect of democratic intervention in the affairs of the state finds direct expression in the improved living condition of the people,” he said.
The governor urged members of OSDPC to translate their appointment to positive development and good fortunes for the state.
“You have a rare opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of the state. It is time for you to justify the trust reposed in you by the people and government of Ondo State,” he said.
Prof. Yomi Dinakin, the Chairman of ODIEC, while responding on behalf of other members, assured the governor and the people of their resolve not to disappoint them.
He pledged their commitment to the rapid development of the state with a view to justifying the trust and confidence reposed in them.
“We have resolved to do our best and ensure that free, fair and credible elections are conducted by the commission in Ondo State,” he said.
