NUATE seeks anti-terror training for FAAN security officials
The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) on Monday told the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to train and equip Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel on how to handle security threat by terrorists.
The Secretary General of the union, Mr Olayinka Abioye, made the call in an interview with our reporter in Ikeja.
Abioye said the call was necessitated by the recent terror threats to attack airport facilities made by suspected terrorists.
He noted that adequate training and equipping of AVSEC officers would thwart any attempt by terrorists to hit the nation’s airports.
“Aviation security is within the purview of FAAN as provided by Annex 17 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
“This means therefore, that the primary protection of lives and properties and the safety of passengers within the airport, rest on the shoulders of aviation security of FAAN.”
According to Abioye, the personnel who will be specially trained will protect the airside, the perimeter fences and other restricted areas within the airport.
He said that AVSEC would handle security issues together with other security agencies, including the Police, Air Force and the Department of State Services.
Abioye noted that NUATE was in total support of the measures being put in place by the government to beef up security at all airports in the country.
He said the efforts should, however, be properly coordinated to prevent unhealthy rivalry between the agencies to avoid security breaches.
Abioye also advised passengers and airports users to be vigilant and report suspicious movement of unauthorised people loitering within the airport.
“We are talking about terrorism which is a very serious matter and we know that fighting terrorism begins with each and every one of us.
“We need to be vigilant and whatever you see, you report immediately.
“The job of safe-guarding the airport is a collective one and we are going to support the government and other security agencies in doing the job,” he said.
