The command’s Spokesman, Mr Ado Adamu, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Dutse.

Adamu said the initiative was part of the corps routine measures for checking the safety of vehicles on the road.

He added that the exercise, which was fine-free, was designed to advise drivers on how to keep their vehicles safe on the road.

“As part of routine measures for checking the safety of vehicles on the road, the FRSC periodically embarks on free vehicle checks in all the corps’ formations across the nation.

“The exercise is designed to check list of defects associated with safety matters and advised motorists to correct them and about 20 safety items are on the check list.

“It is an initiative of the corps to give drivers opportunity to fix their vehicles without penalty,” Adamu said.

He explained that the command had so far conducted four editions of such checks in the state in this year.

“In Jigawa this year alone, about four editions of Free Vehicle Safety Checks were conducted and the most recent ones were carried out on June 23 and June 24 in Dutse, Hadejia, Gumel and Birnin Kudu local government areas.

“At the end of the exercise, a total number of 180 vehicles were checked with 360 defects, and prevalence among them were: Tyre 38; Head lamp 35; First Aid box 30; Caution signs 28; Windscreen 26; Mirror 24; Extra tyre 24; and Seat belts 18,” he said.

He said that the Sector Commander, Mr Corps Angus Ibezim, had admonished drivers to take advantage of the exercise by carrying out regular checks on their vehicles.
