Recruitment: Nigeria Prisons Service receives 39,000 applications, says PRO

The Nigerian Prisons Command in Oyo State says it has trained no fewer than 82 inmates since January.

The command’s Public Relation Officer, ASP Anjorin Olarewaju, disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview with our reporter in Ibadan.

Olarewaju said the skills acquired by the inmates during the training programme included carpentry, tailoring, shoemaking, electrical/electronics repair, welding, computer operation, barbing, bricklaying as well as arts and bead making.

“We have 82 inmates that have been trained between January and August while some have been released from the prison,’’ he said.

He expressed gratitude to religious bodies and Non-Governmental Organisations that had been assisting inmates to acquire skills as providing basic items.

Olarewaju called on other organisations and individuals to provide support in the rehabilitation of the inmates.

The spokesman, who said the rehabilitation of inmates should not be left to the government alone, called on stakeholders to render support.

Olarewaju also said segregating ex-prisoners would jeopardise the rehabilitation efforts of the command.
