Buhari, 2019 elections and the law By Reuben Abati

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday assured Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration was committed to addressing pressing issues that directly affected citizens, notably security, the economy and corruption.

Mr Yekini Nabena, the APC acting National Publicity Secretary, gave the assurance in the party’s Independence Day Anniversary message to Nigerians in Abuja.

Nabena emphasised that these were the promises the party made to Nigerians, which it was poised and committed to keep, adding that together, Nigerians would achieve greater progress and development.

“The APC celebrates with Nigerians at home and abroad on the proud occasion of our country’s 58th Independence anniversary from colonial rule.

“Indeed, our journey as a country after independence has been an interesting and intriguing one, with its ups and downs.

“We have overcome national stresses such as the civil war, military incursions in governance and other challenges which have threatened our nationhood.

“We assure Nigerians that the President Buhari-led APC administration is focused on the pressing issues that directly affect Nigerians; security, economy and fighting corruption.

“These are promises we made and we will keep,’’ he said.

The APC spokesman stressed that Nigerians must however continue to build and consolidate on the efforts of the founding fathers to ensure a united nation.

He said that despite our seeming differences, our ability to harness the strength of our diversity would propel the country to its deserved heights among the comity of progressive nations.

Nabena urged the citizens to reflect back to where the country started and see the tremendous progress that it has made, particularly under the President Buhari-led APC administration.

He said the country currently had a responsive and responsible government working for the people, adding that its social intervention programmes were touching the lives of Nigerians, particularly the youth and vulnerable citizens.

The APC spokesman assured that the administration was seeking lasting solutions to the perennial farmer-herders clashes.

He said that Nigerian citizens are breaking new and innovative grounds globally, adding that our sportsmen and women had continued to make the country proud through their exploits in international tournaments.

Nabena commended the military and other security agencies , saying that they had continued to put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of all Nigerians, particularly in the North-East.

He noted that displaced citizens in the North-East especially, were returning to their rebuilt and rehabilitated communities to continue their normal and productive lives.

“Our democracy is maturing; elections are more participatory, transparent and credible; the economy is stable and increasingly diversified; waste, corruption and impunity is gradually being erased from our national life,’’ he said.

The APC spokesman said that at party level, the APC was deepening internal party democracy as demonstrated in its adoption of the participatory Direct Primary mode of election to elect most of its candidates for the 2019 general elections.

“As we go into general elections in 2019, the need to elect responsive and responsible governments at all levels has become more imperative.

“We must not allow those individuals and their political parties that ruined the country to return to governance.

“Together, we can do a lot more for the progress and development of our dear country. Our future is bright,’’ Nabena maintained.
