Crashes: 85 people die within 6 months in Edo – FRSC

The Pankshin unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in Plateau, has begun a special patrol in the rural areas toward preventing road crashes during the festive period.

According to Mr Nnamdi Ikeh-Akabogu, the Unit Commander, the primary concern is to protect the lives of people that will be traveling across the central part of the state.

“Life is precious and we do not want anyone to lose his or her life due to the carelessness and recklessness of a driver.

“We want everyone to celebrate Christmas and transit to the new year in one piece,” he said.

Ikeh-Akabogu decried the bad attitude of some drivers during celebrations like the Christmas, noting that such “stupidity” had often killed many innocent people.

He disclosed that the command had deployed 96 personnel, comprising regular and special marshals, to various highways across the zone to ensure effective and efficient control of traffics for safety of travelers.

The commander identified major routes receiving special attention to include Panyam-Kerang-Chip road, Pankshin-Amper road, Panyam-Mangu Halle road and Mangu-Gindiri road.

He counseled motorists to pay attention to dangerous areas like Corner Machiji along Kerang-Chip road, and Corner Kuka along Pankshin-Amper, saying that most road crashes were usually around such areas.

According to him, the patrol teams have been instructed to impound the vehicle of any driver caught contravening traffic rules and regulations during the yuletide.

According to him, FRSC operatives shall be looking out for drivers guilty of speeding, dangerous driving, wrongful overtaking, overloading, lane indiscipline, seat belts violation and speed limiting device violation, among others.

He said that the unit had carried out campaigns at motor parks and religious institutions aimed at enlightening the populace on the need to drive carefully so as to stay alive.
