The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says 12,133 candidates registered for its ongoing 2019 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) First Series for private candidates.

The council’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr Damianus Ojijeogu, disclosed this in an interview with our reporter on Monday in Lagos.

According to him, the figure shows 3. 51 per cent increase over the 11,721 which registered for the maiden edition in 2018.

He said that the council had made efforts to ensure a smooth conduct of the examination across the country.

Ojijeogu told our reporter that the examination, which began on Jan. 21, would be concluded on Feb. 4, adding that candidates were being tested in 19 subjects.

He said that the release of results would be expected in March.

“It is the belief of the council that the examination officials will go the extra mile to enforce rules and regulations governing the conduct of the examination.

‘’The council also expects candidates to abide by the rules and regulations.

“It is only when they abide by the rules that examination malpractice can be nipped in the board,” he said.
