Election: NYSC urges Police to protect Corps members, expresses fear over fake kits

Mrs Francesca Ifon, the Abia state Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has advised corps members involved in the conduct of the upcoming general elections to avoid acts that could bring the name of the scheme to ridicule.

Ifon gave the advice on Tuesday in Umuahia during a seminar organised by NYSC, in conjunction with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to educate corps members on their expected roles during the polls.

She said: “The scheme and the entire nation repose so much confidence in the corps members so you cannot afford to fail the nation at this point in time when your services are highly needed.”
She, therefore, admonished them not to soil their hands during the exercise but remain neutral, while discharging their duties.

The state coordinator further warned that anyone caught engaging in electoral malpractice stood the risk of being arrested and prosecuted by the law enforcement agencies.

Alhaji Musa Abubakar, Deputy Director, Research and Statistics, NYSC, warned corps members against violating the electoral laws.

Abubakar further warned that the scheme would also met out sanctions to any corps member arrested in connection with electoral fraud.

He cautioned them not to accept financial inducement from any politician during the elections.

Mrs Ohakwe Okere, Assistant Electoral Officer, Umuahia North Local Government Area, spoke on the the need for the corps members to be properly dressed in their uniforms during the exercise.

She said that by doing so, they could be easily rescued in the event of any untoward incident.

Our correspondent reports that corps members from the four local government areas in Umuahia Zone attended the seminar.
