Mr Ogbuagu Anikwe, the Commissioner for Information in Enugu State says that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has restored the lost glory of Daily Star, the state owned newspaper.

Anikwe made the disclosure in Nsukka on Wednesday in a ceremony to officially open Daily Star Newspaper, Nsukka office.

He said the newspaper was gradually regaining its position as the best state owned newspaper in the South East.

“Before Ugwuanyi assumed office as the governor of Enugu State, Daily Star was in a state of coma as you could hardly see it in any newspaper stand.

“Because of the special attention of the governor to the Enugu State Printing and Publishing Corporation (ESPPC), Daily Star has become regular in newspaper stand in the state since February, 2017 till date.

“It is as result of the life that has come back to Daily Star that made it possible for us to open Nsukka office today.

“Daily Star workers in particular and Enugu State people in general will remain grateful to Ugwuanyi for resuscitating this state owned newspaper,” he said.

The commissioner said that very soon the bus requested by Daily Star management to ease newspaper circulation would be delivered as it was captured in the 2019 budget of the state.

“I assure you that very soon Daily Star will have circulation bus as it is in Enugu State 2019 budget.

“I urge Daily Star workers to continue to put in their best in order to reciprocate government good gesture,” he said.

In a remark, Mr Crescent Odo, the Managing Director of ESPPC said that opening of Nsukka office was as a result of growing patronage of the newspaper since Ugwuanyi revived it.

“In 1970s and 1980s, Daily Star was the king of newspapers in South East and beyond but because of lack of attention by successive governments the paper became moribund.

“We thank God who used Ugwuanyi as an instrument to revamp the newspaper.

“I assure the governor that we will continue to make judicious use of every one Naira invested in the newspaper.

“With the opening of Nsukka office, we expect greater patronage from Nsukka, the university community,” he said.

Odo however, reiterated his appeal for a bus to ease circulation of the newspaper as against the present situation in which public transports were used.

“We humbly ask the governor to give Daily Star a bus to ease the newspaper circulation, so that we will stop using public transport,” he said.

The MD urged Enugu State government to make it mandatory for all local government councils to use Daily Star in placing their adverts as well as buying some copies of every publication to increase revenue generation of the newspaper.

Our correspondent reports that the highlight of the occasion was the cutting of tape of the new office by the commissioner for information.
