FG trains stakeholders on measurement in oil, gas sector

The Federal Government has commenced the training of stakeholders involved in oil and gas sector on proper metering and measurement in the sector for enhanced national development.

The Director-General of Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mr Osita Aboloma, said this on Monday, while declaring the event open at the National Metrology Institute (MNI), Enugu.

Aboloma, represented by a Director in the institute, Mr Bade Obayi, said that the training as well as stepping it down became necessary in Nigeria because of the large scope of the sector.

He further said that the country depended largely on the oil and gas sector for a greater percentage of its national income.

He said, “The need for proper governance in the diverse management of the sector, in line with international best practices has become more imperative.’’

Aboloma underscored the need for the institute to have a solid knowledge of the metrological control of the measurement system in the industry in the overall interest of the economy.

He said that the training, with the theme, “Oil metering station performance evaluation, using uncertainty tools,’’ was designed to provide the requisite knowledge base for the staff members of NMI to make positive impact on the nation’s economy.

He therefore urged the participants to take optimum advantage of the opportunity to enrich their knowledge in order to improve the lives of Nigerians through standards.

Aboloma thanked the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of the University of Huddersfield, UK, and Sidikat Ibrahim, a researcher with the council, for their valuable conttibutions to the success of the training.

Earlier, Mrs Crescentia Erukpeme, the Zonal Coordinator (South-East), Weights and Measures Department, advocated collaboration among the agencies and bodies involved in standards in the industry.

Erukpeme said that metrology in oil and gas helps to ensure accuracy in order to build lasting trust in measurement in the industry, within and outside the country.

“We hope that all you learnt would be taken home and stepped down for others in your departments, agencies and companies to benefit from,’’ she said.

Our correspondent reports that no fewer than 60 participants drawn from the Department of Petroleum Resources, Weights and Measures Department and NMI participated in the training.
