FRSC to support INEC toward credible Gov’ship/State Assembly polls — Corps Marshal
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reiterated its commitment to providing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with the needed support toward the conduct of credible Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.
Its Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, made the commitment in Abuja on Wednesday while briefing news men on the preparation being made for the election slated for Saturday, March 9.
According to Boboye, the commission is prepared and remains committed to supporting INEC to conduct credible elections as part of its contribution to the success of civil rule in the country.
“The operational strategies we put in place for the Presidential election proved to be quite successful and contributed immensely to the peaceful atmosphere recorded in major parts of the country.
“We have learnt great lessons from the Presidential election especially in the areas of security, safety and crowd management and these experiences would be put into use in the Saturday exercise,” he said.
He disclosed that the corps would sustain its logistics and personnel deployment strategies during the election for the success of the elections.
The corps marshal said that the corps would retain the 19, 000 personnel and operational logistics deployed for the Presidential and National Assembly elections to sustain the same level of peace and public confidence.
He added that FRSC would continue to work closely with INEC and the Nigeria police to ensure that vehicles for conveyance of materials were roadworthy and properly certified, just as drivers would be properly screened and documented.
“Our patrol teams, tow trucks and ambulances would maintain the same operational locations that were used during the Presidential election to address whatever needs that may arise,” he stated.
Oyeyemi told journalists that patrol teams would join other security agencies to ensure that the restriction order on movement of vehicles during election hours was observed.
According to him, the Situation Room will actively monitor events across the country during the election period.
The FRSC boss acknowledged the synergy between the corps and security agencies during the Feb. 23 polls, saying that it reactivated FRSC’s engagement with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in the states and the FCT.
