Nasarawa women laud Al-Makura for appointing 5 women as commissioners
Women in Nasarawa State have commended Gov. Umaru Al-Makura for appointing five women as Commissioners in the state.
Jamilah Sarki, Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, who spoke on behalf of women in the state, gave the commendation on Tuesday in Lafia during the International Women’s day in Lafia.
According to her, this is the first time five women are appointed as commissioners since the state was created in 1996.
“With this appointment, the governor has set a benchmark and standard for those who will come after him to emulate and if possible, beat the record.
“So for any governor after Al-Makura who does less, it will then mean performing below average as far as women in the state are concerned,” the commissioner said.
Sarki, however, said that the day was supposed to be celebrated in March, but that it had to be postponed in the state because of the general elections.
She, therefore, appealed that the new government, the federal and state levels, to give women more opportunity to contribute to governance.
Our correspondent reports that other female commissioners in the state: Mary Enwogulu, Commerce, Industry and Cooperative, Saadatu Yahaya, Works and Housing, Halima Jabiru, Land and Urban Development and Roseline Keyla, Health.
Similarly, Ramatu Dalhatu, Ex-President National Council of Women Society (NCWS), commended the governor for recognising the importance of women in governance and appealed to other states to emulate him.
Dalhatu added that Al-Makura had also appointed a woman as Secretary of the State Government (SSG) during his first tenure.
She also advised women to embrace skill acquisition in their respective homes in order to make their lives worthwhile.
On her part, Salamatu Al-Makura, the Wife of the governor, said that though the occasion would be her last as the wife of the governor, on such occasion, she would continue to support the cause of women in the state.
The governor’s wife was represented by Janet Angbazu, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Education, Science and Technology.
Al-Makura also appealed for more women participation in the next administration, to enable them contribute to national development.
