Applicant in court over alleged theft of phones, ATM card

A 25-year-old applicant, Emmanuel Onayinka, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing a woman’s two phones, Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card and withdrawing N199,000.

Onayinka, who resides in Mushin area of Lagos State, is being tried for stealing and breach of peace, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Edet Akadu, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Nov. 17, 2019, at Isolo Road, Mushin, Lagos.

He alleged that the defendant attacked the Complainant, Adejoke Dauda and snatched her handbag containing her tecno phone valued N30, 000, L9 phone valued N9,000 and ATM card.

Akadu also alleged that the defendant used the stolen card to draw N199,000 from the complainant’s account without her consent.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes Section 168 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Our correspondent reports that Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr K. O. Ogundare, admitted the defendant to a N100, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until Feb. 7.
