NYSC lauds FG, state over C/River orientation camp rehabilitation

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commended the Federal and Cross River state Governments over renovation of its permanent orientation camp in Obubra.

Mr Ayodele Omotade, the Area Director of NYSC South-South, gave the commendation when he visited the NYSC camp on Thursday in Obubra Local Government Area of the state.

He said that erosion was one of the major challenges facing the orientation camp which compelled the Federal Government to commence an erosion control project to ameliorate the situation.

He added that the Cross River state Government also responded by carrying out renovation works of some makeshift hostels and the expansion of the camp lecture hall.

“Holding orientation camp here at Obubra is very peculiar in the sense that we as management of the NYSC have been trying to get the attention of the state government towards carrying out rehabilitation at this place.

“The huge construction site we are witnessing here is as a result of the commitment of the state government and an answer to a call we made to them.

“The erosion control here signified by the landscaping and of course construction of roads being handled by the Federal Government, courtesy of the Ecological Fund office under the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“A sort of expansion has been carried out in the hall and I can also observe a lot of buildings have been touched by the state government,” he said.

He said that the expansion of the hall and renovation of a few hostels were part of the phase one of the work to be carried out in camp.

Omotade lauded Gov. Ben Ayade for heeding to the call for intervention on the camp.

“The hall and hostel that have been renovated are very befitting, so how wonderful will it be by the time the work is completed on the rehabilitation exercise,” he added.

Responding to social media reports of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in some orientation camps, Omotade said that the NYSC was a responsible organisation which placed premium on health.

He further said that during the national lockdown, corps members were engaged in massive production of hand sanitisers, liquid soaps and face masks.

He said that the efforts of management of the NYSC made the National Centre for Disease Control and Presidential Task Force to approve resumption of activities in the camp.

“Let me say this, there is no camp that has the presence of COVID-19 positive corps members; none at all,” he said.
