The team from Rafan ward of Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau on Sunday received a car for winning the Peace, Unity and Reconciliation Football Tournament.

It was reported that the tournament was organised by Sen. Istifaus Gyang (PDP-Plateau) and its star prize was a Volkswagen Sharan vehicle.

Rafan defeated Jenta Adamu ward of Jos North LGA 2-1 to become the winners of the competition at the finals played at the Jos Township Stadium.
The tournament had 73 teams from each electoral ward in the six LGAs which make up the Plateau North senatorial zone.

Speaking at the event, Gyang said the tournament, the first of its kind in the history of the zone, was aimed at promoting peaceful co-existence among his constituents.

He added that the competition was also aimed at promoting the game of football at the grassroots, adding that it would develop hidden talents among the younger generation.

“Today, I stand to appreciate all of you for the privilege you accorded me to be you representative at the Senate.

“This tournament, the first ever in this zone, is aimed at building peace and creating a platform for the youths to showcase their talents in the game of football.

“We shall use this to identify hidden talents so that football stars can be discovered in this zone and by extension the state in general,” the senator said.

Gyang promised to make the tournament an annual event, and urged his colleagues in the political arena to do same in their respective zones so as to promote peace in the state.

It was reported that the Jenta Adamu team which emerged second also got a Volkswagen Sharan vehicle as prize.

Winners of the third and fourth positions in the competition also got N500,000 and N300,000 respectively as cash prizes.

It was also reported that the winners got an additional prize of N3 million from Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa.

The first and second runners-up also received N2 million and N1 million respectively from Musa.
