A 38-year-old businessman, Kabiru Ibrahim, on Thursday appeared in a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, for allegedly cheating his friend of N144,830.

The police charged Ibrahim who resides in Angwan Gwari Gwagwalada, FCT, with two counts of criminal breach of trust and Cheating.

The prosecution counsel, Dabo Yakubu, told the court that the complainant, Mohammed Haliru, of Angwan Dodo Gwagwalada, Abuja, reported the matter at the police station on April 16.

Yakubu said that the complainant on March 4 entrusted his shop in the care of the defendant with goods worth N300,000.

He said that the complainant on April 13 discovered that N144,830 was missing.

The prosecutor said that during police investigation the defendant could not give satisfactory account of the missing money.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 311 and 320 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Owobu Godday, prayed the court to grant his clients bail in the most liberal terms, citing Sections 158 and 163 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) promising that he would not jump bail.

Chief Magistrate Aliyu Shafa admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300,000, with one surety in like sum who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

He adjourned the case until July 28 for hearing.
