The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has pledged her administration’s support for the institution’s Senior Staff Club.

Prof. Obi made the pledge on Monday at the Senior Staff Club during her investiture as patron and life member of the club.

While describing the club as a critical and important segment of the university, she said her administration would partner with the club to move the university to enviable heights.

She said that the Club which is a place to relax and unwind after work, would be given a facelift by the current administration in order to promote social activities.

“We will ensure we do everything within our reach to promote the activities by giving the Club a facelift.

“We plead for understanding because at the moment we are financially constrained but we are hopeful that in no distant time we would contribute our quota to the development of the club,” she said.

She commended the current leadership of the Club for the giant strides made so far in spite of severe economic challenges, adding that the task of developing the Club will be easier, given the pedigree and capacity of the new inductees.

Earlier, the President of the Club, Prof. Chike Ekeopara described the event as ‘significant and special” as it marked the official investiture of the 11th and first female Vice Chancellor of the institution.

Prof. Ekeopara further stated that the ceremony also showcased some of Nigeria’s best, who have made tremendous impact in diverse areas of human endeavors.

He noted that a functional and well-equipped Staff Club is one of the requirements for the institutional accreditation, even as he charged the university not to relent in its efforts at repositioning the Club.

The President, who described the Club as a place to ease stress and relax after a hard day’s job, urged the university management to mainstream a certain sum of money into its annual budget for the sustainable development of the club.
