The Borno wing of the Nigeria Union of teachers (NUT) has urged the State government to ensure that only qualified teachers were employed in its planned recruitment exercise.

Mr Jibrin Mohammed, the Chairman of the union in the state, made the call on Tuesday, in Maiduguri, in a statement to mark the 2021 World Teachers Day.

“The state government should ensure that only professionally trained and qualified persons are engaged in the proposed recruitment of teachers, in order to promote professionalism and effective service in the school system,” Mohammed said.

He also urged the state government to implement the upgraded years of service from 35 years to 40 years, and retirement age at 65 years.

Mohammed, who lamented the non implementation of the minimum wage, annual increments and other entitlements of teachers, said such development would only spell doom for the public education system.

The NUT chairman, however, lauded the cordial relationship between NUT and other stakeholders in the state, particularly the North East Development Commission, for its support in providing food and non food items to families of deceased teachers.

He also lauded the state government for the reconstruction/rehabilitation of schools destroyed by insurgency and the training and retraining of teachers.
