Man, 25, docked for alleged theft, assault

A 25-year-old man, Opeyemi Kareem, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged theft and assault.

Kareem, whose address was not given, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and assault.

The police prosecutor, Insp. Bamikole Olasunkanmi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Nov.20 at about 5:00 p.m. at post office area in Ado-Ekiti.

Olasunkanmi alleged that the defendant stole one Techno phone valued at N70,000 and Access bank A.T.M card and fraudulently withdraw the sum of N8,000 from the account belonging to one Adeniyi Adenike.

He also alleged that the defendant, on Nov.22 at about 6:00 p.m. at Post Office area in Ado-Ekiti, assaulted a police officer, Sgt. Ope Kareem, while performing his lawful duty.

According to him, the offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 356(1) (2) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Gbenga Ariyibi, urged the court to grant his client bail and promised that the defendant would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abdulhamid Lawal, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case till Dec.20 for hearing.
