Senate passes bill to establish school of mines and geological studies

The Senate, on Tuesday at plenary passed a bill to establish the School of Mines and Geological Studies, Guyuk.

The Senate also passed the Federal Universities of Technology Act (FUTA) 2004 (Amendment) Bill, 2022.

With the passage of the FUTA (Amendment) bill, the Senate also gave approval for the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara, from a Diploma awarding institution to a degree awarding Federal University of Technology.

The passage of both bills followed the consideration of two separate reports by the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.

Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Ahmad Kaita, said that establishing the school of mines and geological studies would provide for the training of middle and junior levels manpower for the mining sector.

Kaita added that it would facilitate collaboration between other national and international institutions involved in general exploration and mining of precious stones and ore.

He said it would also encourage training, research as well as general development of teachers’ education.
