Clearing agent bags 2 years jail over N115,000 fraud
A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced a 29-year-old clearing agent, Rasheed Adeola, to two years imprisonment over a N115,000 fraud.
Magistrate Oluwatoyin Ojuromi, sentenced the convict to two years imprisonment without an option of fine after he pleaded guilty.
Adeola, who resides in Oshodi area of Lagos State, was arraigned on March 31, on a count charge of obtaining by false pretences.
Police Prosecutor, Insp. Godwin Oriabure, had told the court that the convict committed the offences at 2 p.m. on March 18, at Ikeja area of Lagos.
Oriabure said that the defendant collected N115,000 from the complainant, Mr Yemi Ogunbuyi, to clear his consignment at Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO) in Ikeja.
He said that Adeola claimed to be able to clear the consignment in three days but converted the money to his personal use.
Oriabure said that after investigation, it was discovered that the defendant used the money to play a betting game and lost everything.
He said that the defendant gave a falsified receipt to the complainant, claiming that he had paid for the clearance.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Sections 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 (Revised).
