2022 Children’s Day: FRSC unveils 11-year-old girl as ambassador

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has adopted a 24-hour Sector Commander, Miss Vanessa Jones, to motivate other children to imbibe road safety culture and enlighten their families.

The Lagos Sector Commander, FRSC, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, made the disclosure during the 2022 Children’s Day celebration and unveiling of the Road Safety Child Ambassador in Lagos on Friday.

Our correspondent reports that the theme of the 2022 FRSC Lagos Children’s Day Celebration is: “Children Weep; Stop The Killing.”

It was reported that May 27 is a national day, set aside to recognise and celebrate children all over the nation.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos Command, on Friday celebrated the children’s Day with 20 schools including private and government-owned within Ojodu Berger axis to enlighten them on safety culture.

Ogungbemide said that the celebration was unique in Lagos because they were not just celebrating the children but using them to reach out to members of the public on the need to drive safe and create better future for them.

“There is no other person closer to their parents to extend the enlightenment on importance of safety on the road than the children themselves.

“The reason we adopted a child for advocacy is that we realised that children are the routes to their parents health.

“We know that anything a child says will always touch the parents and that is why we believe we should use this platform to educate the children,” he said.

Ogungbemide said that Miss Vanessa Jones stood out based on her articulation, passion and ability to educate her mates on the need for safety measures on the roads.

The Zonal Commanding Officer, Zone 2, Asst. Corps Marshal, Mr Peter Kibo, also congratulated the children and charged them to be great Ambassadors of Nigeria.

Kibo said the leaders of tomorrow begins today with the children upbringing and exposures on what is happening in their environment.

“Road Safety is concerned about children because due to accidents on the road, some children became and orphan.

“We are informing the children today being their celebration to inculcate the safety consciousness to understand the roles and regulations to catch them young.

“As they grow with knowledge, they will be correcting the drivers that carry them to school, their parents or other drivers as they go along,” Kibo said.

He said that when the children imbibe safety culture in their young minds, they would grow with it and always obey the rules and regulations of the road.

Commenting, Jones, advised children to always be careful on the road.

She also urged them to desist from playing on the road to avoid death.

“Before you cross, you look left, right and you look left again before you cross and be very observant.

“I can join the Federal Road Safety Corps in future because I just want to be saving lives and also use social media to safe lives,” Jones said.

During the mock meeting of the one day sector commander, Jones also encouraged children to always follow the regulations of the FRSC while crossing the road

Jones, a student of New Pinacle School, Omole Lagos, said that as the one-day sector Commander of Lagos, urged children to also help in appealing to road users to drive carefully in order to avoid road accidents.

She said that children would not want to lose their parents and loved ones any more as a result of road accidents.
