Student docked for alleged laptop, cell phone theft

A 28-year-old student, Francis Clement, was on Thursday brought before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a laptop and two cell phones.

Clement, a resident of Barnawa area of Kaduna, is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.

The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the complainant, Dauda Gabriel, of Narayi High Coast reported the matter at the Barnawa Police Station on May 27.

Leo said that the defendant unlawfully entered the complainant’s room and stole his laptop worth N150,000 and two cell phones valued at N175,000.

He said the items were recovered from the defendant while attempting to sell them.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 234 and 271 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

Emmanuel said the surety must provide evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

He adjourned the case until June 28, for hearing.
