Don’t demonise Ember Months as blood sucking period – FRSC
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo State Command, has warned motorists and the public against demonising Ember Months as blood sucking and tears period.
The state Sector Commander, Joshua Adekanye, gave the warning on Thursday at the flag-off of Ember Months Campaign in Ibadan.
It was reported that theme of the Ember Months is: “Avoid Speeding, Overloading and Unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive”.
Adekanye said the period was as free as other months in the year, adding that disobedient to traffic rules and regulations by motorists led to lost of lives and property during the period and not devil.
According to him, there is always increased economic activities and mass movements that often led to increase vehicular movements, resulting to lost of lives during the Ember Months.
“Motorists don’t consider the condition of roads, pay attention to condition of vehicles because of haste to maximise gain during this period and this result to crash and injury, especially for children and adults of age five to 29,” he said.
Adekanye said that the corps would continue to put measures in place geared toward mitigating the causes of road traffic crashes.
He advised motorists to shun alcohol consumption, use of phone while driving and non use of seat belt, among others.
Adekanye urged motorists to drive with extreme care and caution during the period and beyond, saying that the corps had put measures in place to decisively dealt with violators of traffic rules and regulations.
He commended Gov. Seyi Makinde for supporting the corps and ensuring that roads in the state were motorable.
In his remarks, ACM Uakhemen Ojeamiren, FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Oyo, Osun and Ondo, said that crashes in the zone had reduced tremendous due to regular enforcement and deployment of operational equipment.
Ojeamiren said the corps would not relent in sustaining the achievement so far recorded.
He urged motorists to shun the use of second hand tyres, spending and overloading during the period and beyond to avoid loss of lives and property.
In his message, Makinde, represented by Mrs Olubunmi Oni, the Pamanent Secretary, Cabinet and Special Services, said negligence and impatient by motorists led to road traffic crashes.
The governor called on FRSC to use the Ember Months period for further enlightenment of motorists in order to reduce crashes on the road.
In his remarks, Alhaji Omotomiwa Omolewa, the Secretary, Oyo State Park Management System (PMS), said that the union have been advising its members to always obey traffic rules and regulations and avoid alcohol consumption while driving.
Omolewa called on the Federal and State Governments to urgently look into the deplorable condition of roads to prevent accident.
