The University of Calabar Medical Centre has procured sophisticated medical equipment to boost healthcare services for students of the institution and the university community.

Dr Kaiser Etta, Director, Unical Medical Centre, said that the equipment was bought to enhance the capacity of the institution for excellence in healthcare delivery.

According to him, the University of Calabar under the management of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, is working towards making the centre a cynosure for all eyes in the state.

He listed the newly procured equipment to include; Automated Hematological Analyzer-5 Pack Model, Electrocardiography, Patient Monitor, Spectrophotometer, Autoclave Machine, Ultra Sound Scan Machine and X-ray Machine.

“The newly procured Automated Hematological Analyser, the 5-pack model, is the latest in Calabar. As we speak, it is only the Unical Medical Centre that has a 5-pack analyzer in Cross River.

“Most of the hospitals around have 3-pack model, but we just got the 5-pack model which is the most advanced and sophisticated.

“The device is used for carrying out full blood counts, differential blood counts and all related blood tests.

“The Electrocardiography is used for detecting heart disease, while the patient monitor is used for monitoring vital signs of patients during emergencies.

“We want to raise our power to attract not just the students and staff of Unical, but outside the university community with a view of meeting their health needs,” he said.

He added that the VC has been very magnanimous in giving the medical centre all that is needed to make the faculty a place for excellent healthcare delivery.

Also speaking, Dr Kingsley Akaba, Head of Hematology Department, UNICAL, said that the equipment would help to shorten intervention time by doctors in the facility.

Akaba said that the procurement of the 5-pack machine shows the preparedness of the university’s management towards providing quality healthcare for students, staff and members of the community.
