Nearly 7,000 confirmed dead in Turkey after quake

The number of dead in Turkey after Monday’s earthquake has risen to nearly 7,000, according to official figures.

In Turkey, about 6,957 people have died and more than 38,000 have been injured, the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said on Wednesday.

The number of rescuers trying to find survivors and victims’ numbered over 96,000, the authority said, including teams from abroad.

On top of the Turkish death toll, more than 2,000 have died in neighbouring Syria after the devastating quake on Monday.
