The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Chapter, has re-elected Mrs Funmi Sessi, unopposed, as Chairman.
Sessi, of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, had served as the state chairman of NLC, Lagos since April 2019.
She was re-elected at the union’s 13th Quadrennial State Delegates Conference, 2023, in Lagos on Tuesday.
Other elected members of the union include, Mr Olabisi Adebayo, Vice Chairman; Mr Gbadamosi Adelaja, Vice Chairman; Mr Ojo Ebeneza, Treasurer.
Also elected were Mr Awojide Olurotimi, Auditor; Mr Bakare Abiodun, Auditor; Ms Folashade Ogunjobi, Ex-Officio and Medinat Balogun, Ex-Officio.
The Returning Officer, Mr Sikiru Waheed, said the re-election was the will of the people.
Waheed is the General Secretary, Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees.
“The people believe she has done well and that she should be returned.
“Mine is to come and organise and ensure that we have a very smooth sail, to ensure that everything goes peacefully.
“They had their accreditation committee and the committee was on ground; so it is based on what they submit to me that I work on.
“As far as I am concerned, she has done well; it is the decision of the people of the state, “ Waheed said.
Also, Sessi, who expressed mixed feelings over her victory, said that being the chairman of the union was a life of selfless service.
“It is a mix feeling, like I am rejoicing that we are being elected into office, and also thinking and gazing into the future.
“How to resolve many of the social and economic issues that have bedevilled this country.
“There are so many economic issues that we need to really get on and immediately swing into action.
“We know it is not going to be an easy road; it is going to be bumpy, but like I have said, all hands must be on deck.
“We need our comrades; we need everybody because in unity, we will continue to do great exploits; we need all the comrades to team up with us so that we can realise our dream.
“We have shifted from the era of banging the table and gone into the era of using technicality to address our situations,” she said.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union of Nigeria, Mr Ishola Adejumo, expressed satisfaction over the election.
Adejumo said: “After the whole exercise, this 13th delegates conference of NLC, which has always usually been more of rancour, comes out more successful and more peaceful.
“All the affiliate unions came together and imbibed the spirit of give and take; and that is why together, we are one big family; united workers can never be defeated.
“We are charting a new course for NLC in Lagos state by bringing very vibrant and committed set of comrades who are ready to champion struggles in the state.”
