The Oyo State Government, in partnership with its Waste Management consultant, Mottainai Recycling Ltd, on Saturday rewarded some traders at Bus Stop-Gate in Ibadan.

It was in celebration of the 2023 Global Recycling Day, celebrated globally on March 18, but was shifted to March 25 in Oyo State, following the governorship elections that was held in the country.

Side attractions at the event were a five-kilometre walk, medical checkup and recyclables for rewards, where the highest paid recyclables received N20, 000.

Others were rewarded with cash prizes, drinks, shirts and other gift items.

About two tonnes of recyclables were also recovered during the event.

In his remarks, the Managing Director, Mottainai Recycling Ltd., Mr Adey Adewuyi, said the celebration was aimed at educating residents on the importance of a cleaner environment.

Adewuyi, while appealing to the residents to have an attitudinal change, said that the Recycling company launched the Green Sweepers Initiative to keep the state cleaner.

Represented by the Chief Sustainability Officer, Ms Deborah Fadeyi, the managing director said that Global Recycling Day was an annual event.

According to him, it aims at raising awareness of the importance of recycling and encourage people to take action to reduce waste and protect the environment.

“The Day brings together individuals, organisations and governments from around the world to promote sustainable practices and highlight the benefits of recycling.

“The Oyo State Government, in partnership with Mottainai and other relevant state actors, took out time to sensitise residents and traders about the essence of recycling.

“We are trying to propagate how proper waste management can be done and show how this can be done for rewards,” he said.

Adewuyi said the state was blessed with great landscape that needed to be kept clean to leverage the tourism potential of the state.

He said that proper disposal of wastes would lead to less flooding in the state.

Also, the Chief Operating Officer, Seun Fasuhanmi, said that concerted efforts should be made to protect the environment from plastic pollution.

Fasuhanmi said that the state government was working hard to see that the state residents embrace the culture of recycling.

She expressed gratitude to Wema Bank and other partners for their passion for the environment.

According to her, keeping a clean and sustainable environment would attract Nigerians in the Diaspora back
