LG chairman gives bursary to 100 students in Ondo
Chairman, Akure South Local Government Council in Ondo State, Mr Gbenga Olaniyi, has given bursary to 100 students of different tertiary institutions who hail from the area.
Our correspondent reports that the bursary was distributed through the executives of National Association of Akure Students [NAAS].
Olaniyi, while speaking at the occasion in Akure on Thursday, said that the gesture was to assist indigent students of the council area.
According to him, the gesture will complement the state government’s efforts at repositioning education in the state.
“This programme was initiated as part of our commitment to supporting the aspirations of prospective tertiary education seekers.
“The programme has been rested in the council before it was resuscitated by my administration.
“None of these young people are children of the elite and some of them are very brilliant.
“We chose to empower them to liberate their minds and make them better citizens, who will resist the urge to engage in social vices.
“I have said it and I am reiterating it that we won’t stop supporting our students to be great in life,” he said.
The chairman, who said that he decided to take the financial burden off the beneficiaries’ parents, added that education would eradicate criminality and make the youth more responsible.
NAN reports that NAAS also presented the council chairman with an award in recognition of his support for education.
Responding, the NAAS President, Miss Oluwadunsin Funso, appreciated the chairman for the gesture, stressing that it would have greatly assist the beneficiaries in their educational pursuits.
