A 30-year-old woman, Nkiruka Obioma, who allegedly obtained N2.4 million under false pretences, was on Friday brought before an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and stealing preferred by the police.
She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, ASP Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 15, 2022, at No.16, Jegede St., Akinogun, Lagos State.

He said that the defendant fraudulently obtained the sum from one Mr Dele Iloanya in the guise of using it for business purposes and paying back afterwards.

The prosecutor said that the defendant did not pay back the money but converted it to her own use.

According to him, the offences contravene Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Miss K. A. Ariyo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until May 12 for mention.
