Court dissolves 16-year-old marriage on wife’s request

An Area Court at Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, Kwara, has dissolved the Islamic marriage between Rashidat Mumeen and Mumeen Saliman on the request of the wife.

The presiding Judge, AbdulQadir Umar, ruled that the husband and wife should go their separate ways due to inability to settle their misunderstanding.

Umar said that the wife should observe three months Iddah period, as prescribed by Islam and that they must conduct another Islamic marriage if they wanted to continue as husband and wife again.

He, however, granted Rashidat the custody of the four children produced by the union.

The husband had earlier agreed to the wife’s divorce application, but wanted custody of the children, to keep them in his mother’s care.

The wife, however, objected, saying that she won’t allow anybody take care of her children on her behalf while still alive.
