Police arraign employee, 47, over alleged fraud

A 47-year-old employee, Opeyemi Afe, on Friday, appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding his employer of N458,000.

The defendant, whose address was not given, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of fraud leveled against him.

The police prosecutor, Insp Moyosola Adesola, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence sometimes in January in Ado-Ekiti.

Adesola said that the defendant, a staff of Abound company, fraudulently obtained the sum of N458,000 from his CEO, Mr Gbenga Ojo, of Abound company and converted the amount to his own use instead of remitting the money into the company’s account.

She said that the offence contravened Section 329(1) (b) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable her study the case file and present her witnesses.

The defence counsel, Mr Opeyemi Esan, urged the court to grant his client bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Franca Olaiya, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case until July 26 for hearing.
