Court remands man over alleged house breaking, stealing

An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun, on Monday, remanded a 38-year-old man, Nwachukwu Chijoke, over alleged house breaking and stealing.

The defendant, whose house address was not given, is being tried for a four-count charge of intent to commit felony, house breaking, stealing and threat to life.

Prosecutor, Insp Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 17, 2023, at about 11:00 am at Road 11, House 15G, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun.

Osanyintuyi alleged that the defendant broke into the apartment of the complainant, Dr Umoru-Oke Aduke, aand stole properties belonging to him.

According to him, the stolen items include gold and silver costume chains, ear rings, wedding ring and N25,900 and US$7,000 cash with a total value N5,771,500 only.

The Prosecutor further told the court that the defendant allegedly threatened the complainant’s daughter, Ramat Oke, with a broken glass and threatened the peaceful co-existence of the residents of Road 11, House 15G OAU, Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi told the court that the offence contravened sections: 86, 383, 390(9), 411 and 412 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Unah Sunday, pleaded for the bail of the defendant in most liberal terms, saying his client would not jump bail, but would provide reliable sureties.

The Magistrate, Mr Abosede Sarumi, ordered the remand of the defendant at Ile-Ife Correctional Centre and adjourned the case until Aug. 2 for the consideration of his bail.
