Egbewole advocates support for indigent students
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, has appealed to wealthy individuals in the country to always assist the less privileged, especially indigent students.
The vice chancellor made the call in Ilorin on Wednesday during the official presentation of cheques to the beneficiaries of 2022 scholarship scheme.
Represented by the Dean, Student Affairs, University of Ilorin, Prof. Musa Yakubu, he expressed delight that 11 lucky winners of the scholarship awards are students of the institution.
He described the Chief Executive Officer of Mojirola Educational Foundation, Mr Joseph Duntoye, as a blessing to humanity and someone who is worthy of emulation.
“In this present economic situation in the country we need more people like the donor to assist our youths especially in the area of education.
“Education is the best legacy that can be bequeathed to children and youths,” he said.
Dr Ruth Abiola Adimula, the Project Coordinator, said that in 2021, about 15 students of various tertiary institutions benefited from the scheme as each of them went home with N200,000.
Adimula, who is also a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies in the university, explained that in 2023, each of the 20 beneficiaries was given N150,000 only.
She explained that the philanthropic project that commenced last year was established to cater for students who hailed from Oro town, Igbomina land and across the state at large.
“The award is usually given to indigent students who are either on First Class or Second Class Upper Division in their various courses of study,” she said.
Responding on behalf of other beneficiaries, Mr Jamiu Ridwan, a 500 Level student of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, expressed gratitude to the donor for institutionalising the scholarship scheme.
