Minister says national youth games will revitalise sports

The Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh says the National Youth Games (NYG) holds special significance as a beacon of hope for the revitalisation of the sports industry in Nigeria.

The minister said this on Thursday in Asaba at the opening of the 8th edition of the Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta.

He emphasised the importance of grassroots sports development in nurturing young talent and strengthening the country’s position in global sports.

Enoh reiterated the role of grassroots sports development in building a strong sports sector, noting that this event plays a pivotal role in identifying and nurturing young talent.

“In today’s world, sports play a crucial role in creating wealth, promoting peace, fostering national unity, and facilitating international diplomacy.

“This is why the current administration, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu is committed to repositioning the sector for optimal performance in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

The minister called for a renewed focus on grassroots sports, following Nigeria’s disappointing outing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

He stressed the need for a framework that goes beyond talent identification, to one that ensures comprehensive nurturing from the grassroots to elite levels of competition.

Enoh commended the efforts of Delta government for his continued support of grassroots sports, particularly at a time when hosting such a national event is challenging.

“With 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials cleared to participate, the highest number ever recorded for the National Youth Games this edition promises to be historic,” he said.

Enoh called on athletes and officials to demonstrate the spirit of fair play, urging them to compete cleanly and abide by the rules.

“This year’s edition of the games presents yet another opportunity to initiate the process of athlete development for the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions and the setting of world records,” he added.

The Minister thereafter declared the Games open on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

The NYG is scheduled to end on Sept. 19.
