Nigerian blackmail ring arrested for extorting Croatian man with nude photos
In a stunning revelation, Nigerian police have apprehended four suspects accused of blackmailing an unnamed Croatian man by using his intimate photos.
The Force’s spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Muyiwa Adejobi, made the shocking disclosure in Abuja on Thursday, sending ripples through the international community.
The suspects, identified as Abodunrin Rasheed, Abodunrin Tunde, and Abodunrin Rokeeb, along with a yet-to-be-named accomplice, lured the Croatian victim into their trap through a dating app, posing as a woman to deceive him.
The unsuspecting man, convinced he had found romance, was manipulated into sending nude photos of himself. What followed was a nightmare of extortion as the group threatened to expose the photos to his family and friends unless he paid a hefty ransom.
The case, which was cracked by the National Cybercrime Center (NCC) of the Nigerian police, has unveiled a disturbing web of deceit that spans international borders. According to Mr. Adejobi, these criminals had engaged in similar cyber scams, extorting numerous victims worldwide with the proceeds primarily funneled through gift cards like iTunes and Steam.
A high-stakes investigation led to their arrest, with the police recovering six iPhones, two Android phones, and a Lexus car from the suspects. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to cybercriminals, vowing to clamp down on such activities as the suspects await their day in court.
This shocking bust serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers lurking in the world of online dating and cybercrime.
